Infectious Substances Training Introduction

Students will be provided with comprehensive information including training requirements from IATA DGR 1.5 and 49 CFR §172.704. This seminar emphasizes the necessary activities that must be addressed when preparing hazardous materials and dangerous goods for shipments as it relates to Infectious Substances and Biological Substances, Category B. This one-day course also covers shipments containing UN 1845, Dry Ice.

This course ensures students are up to date with the latest changes from IATA/ICAO along with Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (for U.S. based shippers). This course is based on the most current edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Students will learn how to properly classify, identify, package, mark, label and document shipments of the following materials:

  • Category A — UN 2814 and UN 2900,
  • Category B — UN 3373,
  • Exempt Human Specimens and Exempt Animal Specimens,
  • Genetically Modified Organisms — Infectious & Non-Infectious, and
  • Class 9 — Dry Ice
Additionally, this course includes training in security awareness required for U.S. shippers (see 49 CFR §172.704(a)(4)) and emergency response procedures for shipments of dangerous goods involving infectious substances.

Course Syllabus

This hazmat training course is designed for:

Doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals; laboratory technicians; veterinarians. Those who prepare infectious substances and diagnostic specimens for transportation, select packaging and packages infectious substances and diagnostic specimens, completes a shipper's declaration or other paperwork associated with the transport of infectious substances and diagnostic specimens; loads, unloads or handles hazardous materials, including infectious substances and diagnostic specimens; or is responsible for safety of transporting hazardous materials.

  • Division 6.2 compliance and regulations
  • General awareness/familiarization training
  • Function specific training
  • Safety training
  • Category A Substances
  • Category B Substances
  • Exempt Human Specimens and Exempt Animal Specimens
  • Genetically Modified Organisms
  • Class 9, UN 1845, Dry Ice
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Locate and use Title 49 Code of Federal Reguations and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations
  • Properly label and mark hazardous material packages for shipment
  • Complete Bill of Lading and Shipper's Declaration for hazardous materials
  • Select proper packaging for hazardous materials
  • Develop appropriate emergency response information to accompany shipments
