49 CFR 2-Day Initial Hazmat Training Introduction

This two-day introductory-level course provides students with the basic skills needed to prepare, offer and accept shipments of hazardous materials by ground. The course gives students the knowledge and background necessary to satisfy regulatory requirements for training in hazmat transportation based on
Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations.
This course is designed for basic shippers, freight forwarders, third party logistics entities, carriers and freight brokers.
Course Syllabus
Upon successful completion of this course, the student shall have satisfied training requirements for initial hazmat training in accordance with
49 CFR §172.704 and shipping hazardous materials by ground transport:
- Regulatory applicability - 49 CFR regulatory background and jurisdiction, key definitions, structure of the 49 CFR
- Classification and Identification - Class hazard definitions and compatibility, use of Hazardous Materials Table / Special Provisions, and selection of the most correct proper shipping name
- Packaging - Identification and use of non-bulk packaging requirements, non-bulk packaging limitations, specification packaging requirements and selecting the correct package
- Marking and Labeling - Marking specification and proper application, identification and use of correct hazard and handling labels
- Placarding - Placarding requirements, placarding specification, and shipper’s responsibilities
- Documentation - Requirements for preparing and retaining shipping papers, additional description requirements
- Emergency response - Requirements for providing and maintaining emergency response information, requirements for providing an emergency response telephone number
Course Information
Students will attend a comprehensive two-day, instructor-led training seminar to learn about the 49 CFR regulations, how its used and how it applies to the hazmat employee. Students will answer review questions after each section of training, followed by a final examination summarizing all of the topics discussed throughout the training course.
Students will utilize a special Bureau of Dangerous Goods training workbook throughout the course, referencing and summarizing the 49 CFR regulations. Students will also use the 49 CFR in simulated examples to further their understanding of the structure and sections of the 49 CFR regarding hazardous materials transportation.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a training certificate that satisfies
49 CFR §172.704(d) for training record retention purposes.
