PHMSA, effective immediately, has authorized the use of the new shipping descriptions for lithium batteries currently being used in international regulations for shipments of dangerous goods. PHMSA will consider adopting these shipping descriptions into the HMR at a future date. Shippers and carriers have expressed safety concerns over using the same shipping descriptions for both lithium metal and lithium ion batteries, which has caused significant problems and delays in the transportation of these dangerous goods.
